Dear reader,

MarkVault Drift began when two of us tired of delivering strategy decks that looked impressive in the room and dissolved within a quarter. The slides were fine; the absence of a master copy was not. Clients forwarded fragments to agencies. Agencies improvised. Founders returned to instinct. The position did not change — it simply became unreadable.

We opened on Tyrwhitt Road because Jalan Besar still rewards plain speech. Petain Road hardware shops do not rebrand themselves quarterly. Rochor florists keep handwritten stock lists that customers trust because the handwriting is consistent. We wanted a studio neighbourhood that reminded us daily that coherence is a physical discipline, not a presentation skill.

Before the studio existed, we worked inside larger agencies where brand strategy was a department slide in a credentials deck. The work was competent; the filing was not. Positioning frameworks lived on shared drives with names like FINAL_v7_REAL.pdf. Voice manuals were emailed once and never pinned. When a new marketing lead arrived, they reconstructed the story from whatever PDF forwarded fastest. That is not malice — it is missing infrastructure.

We built the Chalk Ledger method as infrastructure: numbered folios, gutter splits that show who does what, dispatch rules that name a custodian. The method is deliberately unglamorous. Glamour fades; ledgers remain.

The Chalk Ledger name describes the room: white surfaces, ruled sheets, index cards pinned where daylight falls. We work in daylight because brand decisions made under warm lamp glow at midnight tend to romanticise the company. Mid-morning light is less flattering and more useful.

We are a small practice — a lead strategist, a senior editor, and occasional specialist researchers for category language reviews. We do not maintain a bench of twenty consultants to impress visiting procurement teams. When you brief us, the people in the provenance photograph are the people who annotate your folio.

The first conversation is usually thirty minutes by phone or at the doorplate desk. You describe drift symptoms: inconsistent category language, a launch that contradicted the website, a new market hire who inherited contradictory templates. We ask for samples, not ambitions. If the fit is wrong — you need media buying, performance creative, or a logo in forty-eight hours — we say so and point elsewhere. We are not offended by mismatch; we are relieved.

When the fit is right, we propose a column from the engagement page, name a custodian requirement on your side, and confirm commercial terms in writing before any ruled sheet is ruled. No speculative concepts, no free audit bait, no competition for your business against three other studios on the same brief.

Singapore is small enough that reputation travels along the five-foot way. We describe methods precisely and outcomes qualitatively. We do not publish client logos as trophies or cite revenue impact we did not measure. If you need a case study with numbers, we are the wrong studio.

The studio floor is deliberately quiet. We do not run a trading-desk atmosphere or celebrate late-night revisions. Documents written in a hurry read like hurry; the Chalk Ledger method assumes mornings, ruled sheets, and time to read aloud before anything is marked master. Clients who need overnight turnaround for tactical copy usually work better with a campaign studio — we are happy to recommend one when the brief is execution-heavy rather than position-heavy.

Our district neighbours remind us that consistency is visible. The Tyrwhitt Road barber keeps the same pole sign for decades. The Petain Road print shop still files jobs by hand. We borrow that discipline: folio numbers increment, amendment logs stay open, and nobody on our team rewrites a positioning line because a competitor launched something louder on LinkedIn. Drift is corrected in writing, not in reaction.

Thank you for reading this far. The door is on the first floor above the shophouse frontage — details on Doorplate.
